Teaching Azerbaijani Multiculturalism Continues in Turkey

In the Turkish city of Kayseri, at the Erciyes University, the teaching of the “Azerbaijani multiculturalism” discipline continues. This is an optional course for masters based on a program developed by the University’s Faculty of Social Sciences. The lessons provide extensive information about national minorities in Azerbaijan, which has made multiculturalism its state policy, and the opportunities created for their national cultural development. It is important that the self-expression of small-numbered peoples living in Azerbaijan is an example for other countries. In addition, in the lessons, the Azerbaijani language, culture, and the country’s experience are taught. The discipline is taught by Professor of Armenology at the Erciyes University Gafar Chakhmagli. Gafar Chakhmagli has noted that the lessons taught here are long-term ones and that several students who studied multiculturalism in previous years took part in the International Winter School of Multiculturalism in Azerbaijan and returned from Azerbaijan with great impressions. Like in previous years, the main purpose of teaching lessons is firstly to give knowledge of Azerbaijan, the people living here, their language, traditions, and rich culture. Secondly, at the courses, the tolerant attitude of Azerbaijan, which is a multinational country towards other peoples who live here, and its exemplary experience adopted recently by many countries, will be discussed. In November 2019, the National Union of Turkish Students in Kayseri plans to hold a conference on the topic “Azerbaijani multiculturalism. An example of national-spiritual values” to propagate the values of Azerbaijani multiculturalism and tolerance.
