Baku has hosted an event dedicated to the 16^th of November - the International Day of Tolerance.

The event organized by Baku International Centre of Multiculturalism was attended by the members of the Milli Majlis, representatives of diplomatic corps, figures of science and culture and representatives of religious communities.

Academician Kamal Abdullayev, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Baku International Centre of Multiculturalism, Rector of Azerbaijan University of Languages, delivered a speech at the ceremony and stated that the present level of the environment of tolerance in our country is the outcome of the policy pursued by President Ilham Aliyev in this line - the equal attitude to all our citizens irrespective of their religion, language and national identity. All the citizens in Azerbaijan enjoy equal rights irrespective of their religious and national identities and are free in their belief. For its multicultural and tolerant lifestyle Azerbaijan is an example in the world. Multiculturalism is a lifestyle as well as state policy in Azerbaijan. There is no alternative to multiculturalism and tolerance. Rejection of this policy implies nursing anti-Semitism, xenophobia, Islamophobia in the bosom. The state of Azerbaijan attaches great importance to the policy of multiculturalism to protect its citizens and provide continuous stability. The bestowal of Diploma of Honours by the head of our state on the leaders of the traditional communities in our country on the Day of Tolerance last year is the bright example of attention to them.

Further the individuals advocating and promoting the model of Azerbaijani multiculturalism in the country and abroad were awarded the Diploma of Honours of Baku International Centre of Multiculturalism.

Fuad Nurullayev, the Deputy Chairman of the Caucasian Muslims Office, emphasized that the age of multicultural values and traditions of tolerance in Azerbaijan is measured by centuries and the people of different religious faith have co-existed in our country for many centuries. Azerbaijan is one of the fewest countries in the world where the people of all religions enjoy peaceful coexistence. There is an identical attitude to the representatives of all religions.

Sayyad Salahli, the First Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations, said that the policy of tolerance pursued by the state of Azerbaijan facilitates the further consolidation of friendship and fraternity among the ethnic and religious communities living in our country. All this is the indicator of President Ilham Aliyev’s successful continuation of the strategic line founded by the national leader Heydar Aliyev. The present state of the tolerant and multicultural environment in our country is the outcome of the state policy pursued by President Ilham Aliyev – the equal attitude to all our citizens irrespective of their religion, language and national identity.

The Archbishop of Baku and Azerbaijan Eparchy Aleksander Ishein, the Chairman of the religious community of Azerbaijani mountain Jews Milikh Yevdayev, the Ordinary of the Apostolic Prefecture of the Roman Catholic Church in Azerbaijan Vladimir Fekete and the Chairman of the Alban-Udi Christian community Robert Mobili spoke of the importance of the International Day of Tolerance. It was pointed out that the celebration of this day as a great ceremony in Azerbaijan known as the valley of tolerance and multiculturalism in the world is the right of each Azerbaijani citizen at present.

The event was continued with cultural program prepared by the organizational support of the cultural centres of Azerbaijan University of Languages that represent different countries.
