A European Regional Forum on “Hate Speech, Social Media and Minorities” was held on September 21-22

The forum was convened by the UN Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues and was organized by a number of European and international organizations and institutions with the support of the Austrian Foreign Ministry. The forum was attended by UN Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues Fernand de Varennes, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg, Chair of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance Maria Daniella Marouda, Director General of Democracy at the Council of Europe Snežana Samardžić-Marković, Director of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights Michael O’Flaherty, Head of the Section of Freedom of Expression and Security of Journalists of UNESCO Guilherme Canela, Director of the office of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Christophe Kamp, OHCHR Regional Representative for Europe Birgit Van Hout, Head of Facebook’s Oversight Board Thomas Hughes and others. Speaking at the forum on the subject of “Positive initiatives in fighting hate speech against minorities on social media,” Baku International Multiculturalism Center employee Rahim Rahimov shared concrete examples from Azerbaijan’s experience with the forum participants. Rahimov’s relevant recommendations on the subject were included in the European regional document developed by the UN Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues.
