The Course “Azerbaijani Multiculturalism” to be taught in India

 

On December 20 the Acting Executive Director of Baku International Centre of Multiculturalism Ravan Hasanov met with the authorized representative of Sri Sri University of India, Director of the International Foundation “Art of Living” Swami Jyothirmayah. Giving thorough information on the activities of Baku International Centre of Multiculturalism, and the projects implemented by it, Ravan Rasanov stated at the meeting that the rich cultural and moral legacy and traditions of tolerance of Azerbaijan located at the juncture of civilizations are internationally recognized. The national-cultural diversity and the environment of religious-ethnic tolerance have turned Azerbaijan into an unparalleled place of intercultural dialogue as a multinational and multi-confessional land on the world scale. The state policy targeted at the maintenance of that cultural, ethnic diversity and pursued successfully in the Republic of Azerbaijan today necessitates the coverage of the great historical experience accumulated in the field of multiculturalism for long centuries with special care, its enrichment and the intensification of the international advocacy of the unique achievements obtained in this aspect in society. At present the course “Azerbaijani Multiculturalism” is being taught at 40 prestigious universities of our Republic and 17 leading universities of the world in the frames of the project.

In his turn, the authorized representative of Sri Sri University of India, Director of the International Foundation “Art of Living” Swami Jyothirmayah expressed his pleasure in his familiarization with a multi-national, multicultural and tolerant country like Azerbaijan. Stressing the noteworthiness of close cooperation, friendship among various religious communities in Azerbaijan, he pointed out that through its example Azerbaijan encourages the other countries and it is necessary to make use of its experience.

Further an agreement was signed between Sri Sri University of India and Baku International Centre of Multiculturalism on teaching the course “Azerbaijani Multiculturalism” at that University beginning from 2018.

It should be reminded that the above-mentioned project has been launched after the educational programs on “Introduction to Multiculturalism” and “Azerbaijani Multiculturalism” notionally developed at the initiative of Academician Kamal Abdullayev, the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Baku International Centre of Multiculturalism, were approved by the Ministry of Education. Negotiations have been conducted with the universities of foreign countries on teaching these courses with the resources of the Centre, and in the initial period seven foreign universities welcomed the proposal. At present this number has reached 18.

As a result of the consistent and purposeful work carried out by Baku International Centre of Multiculturalism keeping an actual solution to President Ilham Aliyev’s initiative “Let us present Azerbaijan to the world as the centre of multiculturalism” in perspective, teaching the courses on Azerbaijani multiculturalism abroad has been covering a wider geography.
